🛕 Mutiyangana Raja Maha Viharaya – Sacred Buddhist Temple in Badulla
Mutiyangana Raja Maha Viharaya is one of the sixteen most sacred Buddhist sites in Sri Lanka, located in the historic city of Badulla. According to Buddhist chronicles, in the eighth year after attaining Enlightenment, Lord Buddha visited Sri Lanka with 500 monks at the invitation of Nāga King Maniakkika of Kelaniya. During this visit, the Buddha traveled to Badulla upon the invitation of God King Indaka, where he meditated with the monks.
🙏 In commemoration of this sacred visit, King Indaka built a stupa enshrining the revered Mukthaka relics—drops of sweat believed to have turned into pearls during meditation. The present stupa, rebuilt in 1956, stands 65 feet high with a 270-foot diameter, replacing the ancient structure lost to time.
🌿 The temple complex features:
- 🎨 Beautiful mural-adorned image house
- 🛕 Two main shrine rooms: Middle Image House & Sath Sathi Viharaya
- 🌳 Three sacred Bodhi trees:
- Maliyadewa Bodhiya
- Ananda Bodhiya
- Dethis Maha Bodhiya – one of 32 saplings from the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi in India
✨ A visit to Mutiyangana Raja Maha Viharaya offers spiritual serenity, ancient heritage, and deep cultural significance, making it a must-visit destination for pilgrims and travelers exploring Badulla and Sri Lanka’s Buddhist history.
🌄 Alugolla Hill Samadhi Buddha Statue – A Scenic & Spiritual Viewpoint in Badulla
Perched high above Badulla town, the Alugolla Hill Samadhi Buddha Statue is a serene mountaintop viewpoint offering breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views of the Uva Province.
✨ This hidden gem blends natural beauty with spiritual tranquility, featuring a peaceful Samadhi Buddha statue that creates a calm atmosphere ideal for quiet reflection, meditation, and relaxation away from crowds. Visitors can enjoy sweeping views of Badulla, rolling green mountains, mist-covered valleys, and vibrant sunrise or sunset skies, making it a perfect destination for photography and light hiking. Best visited in the morning for clear, cool views or in the afternoon for golden landscapes, Alugolla Hill is an easily accessible, high-altitude escape and a must-visit spot for travelers seeking scenic beauty and spiritual peace in Sri Lanka’s hill country.
💦 Dunhinda Falls – Sri Lanka’s Iconic Bridal Veil Waterfall
Located about 5 km from Badulla in Sri Lanka’s scenic Uva Province, Dunhinda Falls is a majestic 64-meter (210-foot) cascade widely regarded as one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the country. Its name comes from the Sinhala word “Dun,” meaning mist or smoke, inspired by the smoky spray rising from its base, while its graceful shape has earned it the nickname “Bridal Falls.”
✨Visitors reach the main viewing platform via a 1–1.5 km moderately challenging hike featuring concrete steps, boulders, and narrow sections, with a chance to see Kuda Dunhinda, a smaller yet wider waterfall along the trail. According to local legend, the falls were revealed after a brave villager cleared a giant fern blocking the Badulu Oya, ending devastating floods in Badulla. The best time to visit is November to March for powerful water flow or June to July for clear, sunny hiking conditions.
✨Travelers should note that swimming at the base is dangerous due to strong currents and hidden rocks, and monkeys along the trail may grab visible food. The path is lined with vendors offering herbal drinks like Belimal, fresh fruits, and local snacks, making the journey as enjoyable as the destination. With its misty beauty, scenic hike, and cultural folklore, Dunhinda Falls is a must-visit природный wonder for nature lovers and photographers exploring Sri Lanka.
✨At the end of the tour, you will be comfortably dropped off at your original pickup location in Ella, completing a fulfilling journey filled with spiritual experiences, natural beauty, and unforgettable hill country scenery 🌄✨
